Streaming to Xbox 360

Eduardo
posted this on October 02, 2012 09:45

For the longest time I've been able to stream videos to my xbox 360 and today I'm getting a "no Videos" error when I try and access my shared folder from the Xbox 360. I use the shared folder because I am able to see the folders I want to stream in a nice easy to access list unlike the local videos folder which is a huge alphabetical list of all the videos on my pogoplug (useless). Whats strange is that the videos under local folder are all there so it's got to be something telling my xbox that the shared folder has nothing? The Pogoplug was working fine for over a year now and I didn't change any settings so I am puzzled at what it could be. I've tried disabling and re enabling sharing to my xbox with no luck and a complete shutdown and reboot of the pogoplug. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also  I was wondering if pogoplug ever plans to support embedded cover art? all my videos have embedded cover art but pogoplug chooses to make its own video thumbnail (9/10 being a solid black screenshot, very helpful...:/) Thanks.

I just set up my Pogoplug to stream to the Xbox yesterday and thought it curious that the individual folders I'd set up for my videos were not showing anywhere.  The only videos listed were the alphabetical one under "local videos".  So I thought I had something set up incorrectly.  Now that I found this entry, it seems that my videos should be showing up (in their individually designated folders) inside the "share" folder on the Xbox.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone in Tech Support sees this and tells us what is going on.

Hey David, to get this to work I had gone to the website and right clicked on a folder I wanted visible on my Xbox ( my folders are split in genres ex. Action) and chose add user. Then I entered my email address I use for Pogoplug. I did this for every folder I wanted visible. After that was all setup I go to media settings on the website and enable streaming to the Xbox. Now when I go to the shared folder on my Xbox I can see all my folders I shared with myself in a list. Atleast it use to work for me, Now I get a no videos error. Does it work for you though?

Well...I tried to do what you suggested...but apparently the ability to "add users" is an upgrade feature only available with a paid multi-user account (I just have the basic "personal account" for now).  It still seems odd that all the painstaking work I did organizing my files (like you, my videos are categorized by genre folders then by show folders) would not be "seen" by the Xbox.  Any other suggestions that you or anyone else could offer would be most appreciated.

You know what, your right . I was reading this.

http://support.pogoplug.com/entries/21555212-how-do-i-add-family-members-with-pogoplug-family

And they changed it so you need to upgrade your plan. And to think I use to recomend this product to my friends and family. How are people going to make streaming to the xbox even slightly possible if they want to charge a second time for any kind of folder navigation? I complainied about how crappy the local folder being shared to your xbox is ( one big folder with hundreds of files dumped alphabetically in it) when I first bought a pogoplug years ago and was told that the "team" was working on a better way to do this. After countless updates to the pogoplug ( many that removed or broke features people were using with no option to not upgrade or even an email to tell you what changed.) they have yet to address this and doubt they ever will. I use to see alot of hope for the future of this product but this is getting sad. I would link to previous discussions about this and other helpful articles but the geniuses here deleted all the old forums so all that knowledge is gone now.

My only suggestion now for you david is to use windows media player on one of your computers to add the videos folders to its video library then share it from there to your xbox. Effectively this totally defeats the purpose of having the pogoplug since you will need to have that computer on to stream to the xbox .

I'm having exactly the same problem.  I primarily use my Pogoplug device to stream videos to my Xbox 360, I'd shared the relevant folders on my HDD with myself and used to be able to access the folder structure through the Xbox rather than seeing a huge list of all the videos on my HDD.

I guess the problem was caused by the latest firmware update and Pogoplug setting up the Team accounts or something (on the web access I can now see the shared folders under the "Team Folders" section - did it used to say "shared with me"?)

Sort it out Pogoplug, I've been recommending you to everyone and now you've broke the main thing I use it for!

Yeah...I ended up going back to sharing the videos from a shared drive via Windows Media Sharing across my network to the Xbox.  Most disappointing that Pogo apparently saw an opportunity to make a fast buck by forcing you to pay for a multi-user service in order to see your folder structure on an Xbox.  What a crock...

So I started a support ticket about this issue. I've been told they have identified the issue and are working on resolving the issue. I wasn't given any kind of timeframe for when it will be fixed so we will have to wait and see.

Same issue for me with one extra quirk.
I have a "pink pogoplug" and also the "pogoplug PC software".   After the 3.3.0 update I noticed the "shared with me" folder via my xbox showed as being empty when accessing via the pink pogoplug but was populated for the PC pogoplug device even though the folders it shows are actually shared from the pink pogoplug.
All seems to stream fine but means my main PC has to be on which normally it is anyhow.

Would be nice to have it back to as it was.

To all the pogoplug users dying for decent xbox support, I recently contacted their help center and here is my question and their Help Centers response:

Me, Nov 25 23:06 (PST):

Is there a way to view my media on my xbox 360 in the folders I have organized them in on my hard drive plugged into my pogoplug. I have several videos and the local videos folder seems to combine all the videos into one folder which is inconvenient for searching and sorting through. The only resource I have been able to find so far is this thread on your forums:

http://support.pogoplug.com/entries/22118528-streaming-to-xbox-360

It seems there are a bunch of unhappy product users who would like to know the same answer as I. Thankyou for your time and support.

Eli, Nov 25 23:17 (PST):

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Pogoplug Support.

The sharing was used for completely different purpose and it was not working as it should .

The feature has been removed long ago and hopefully more convenient for searching files will be available in the future.

Best regards,
Eli

I was hoping for more of a response and am dissapointed to see no response from Help Center on their own forums. This feature is one of the main reasons I purchased this device. Is there really no progress in this department as of yet?

I don't understand the "not working as it should."  clearly there are dozens of customers that confirm it WAS WORKING AS IT SHOULD...and NOW, it no longer works as it should.  I as well bought the device and was about to buy a family account to support them and now have been looking for other alternatives.  BAD SERVICE POGOPLUG...BAD SERVICE!!!!

I bought this device for this exact reason, playing movies and music on my Xbox without powering up a computer to share the files. If Pogoplug is going to treat their customers like this I will find another solution. Not like Pogoplug is the only solution out there, may even hack this device to make it mine again. I will wait until the New Year is done and if no progress is made by Pogoplug, I will go my own way. Like you guys I have been an advocate of Pogoplug referring several friends to purchase. Not anymore since removing features that were not "working as they should" before coming up with a "working" search function. The users that have no knowledge or skill must think this product is crap from their experience of the product.

Yvon Hebert Dec 29 Hi, to see my movies on the Xbox 360 (local folder) , I had to rename the directories on the media exactly as the tabs found the web app: Music, Photos, Movies. For me, my local folder works fine, unfortunately since I have to many videos, it takes awhile yo load up and scrolling through a huge list is useless to me. What I was trying to find a fix for was the shared with me folder. It use to allow me to see a list of folders that my video collection was seperated into and allowed me to categories my videos to prevent a useless mass list. It has been months since my original support ticket and like every other support ticket I've had with Pogoplug they closed it stating " we have identified the issue and are working on a fix with no ETA." I use to recommend this product to people for just the purpose of streaming to an Xbox and have had to apologize to all of them for wasting their time and money on a product that changes and removes features with no notice to its customers and offers no type of real customer satisfaction or support, they even made sharing folders a paid feature so if you buy a Pogoplug now and they ever get around to fixing this it'll cost you extra. Seriously for a product that had so much potential it has been on of my biggest regrets ever getting one, with every update its like a roll of the dice to see what features they'll take away or break......

when i got my first pogo i was very pleased with the file sharing capability , the first gen pc software worked as it should and devices attached to my network communicated with the pogo . over time the pc software was updated to the point of uselessness just like the firmware updates . older features are now offered for sale as pc software and firmware updates have obsoleted the pogos use on my network ,.  the older forums pogoplugged was taken down and replaced with "this" and all the helpful members have moved on to other products or gone over to archlinux site . i am not sure what the business plan for them is from here since android based devices are driving the market and  real nas boxes are cheaper and faster everyday . my purchase of a zyxel nsa210 ( less than 50 )  opened new worlds the pogoplug would never and is a 3 year + old device still getting great firmware updates even today . unless pogo chooses to unleash  the older boxes and revive there popularity i dont see a future for them as  company since there cloud storage plan works no better than their devices at this time . thanks for the input on folder names will give it a try .

Hi Danny, my AVIs where in a folder called "Videos" in the root directory of the media.

They couldn't by seen by my Xbox that way.

To give a try, I renamed the folder "Videos" to "Movies" and after that the AVIs where listed in the "Local" share on the Xbox.

Yvon Hebert, I think there is some misunderstanding here.  What we're mostly, or all, saying is that we are having no problem whatsoever seeing/viewing our videos via our Xboxes through the Local Videos folder.  What we are saying is that we have lots of videos, like thousands in my case, and the Local Videos folder just lists all of our videos either sorted by title or sorted by type.

We have too many videos to have to go through a massive list like that every time.  Some of us have our videos divided up into our own folders and subfolders and we used to be able to view our folders and subfolders via Xbox's Share with Me folder.  That made it much easier for us to navigate through and find our videos.  Now this option to view our own folders via the Share with Me folder seems to be gone ... leaving us with only the Local Videos folder with our thousands of videos all together with no easy-to-use categorization and navigation system (like using our own folders and sub-folders).

Does that make sense?  :-)

Hi Everyone

Over the Xmas holidays I powered off my Classic Pogoplug, and to my surprise after it booted up and went thru its 2 hours file finding it also had lost the ability to stream to the Xbox. I have also recommended this product, but that was back when a new user could share with up to 4 people, and it worked fine with Xbox. Now 3 of my friends are very unhappy with me because the Pogoplug does not work as I had explained. I will no longer recommend this product to my friends, and I guess I need a new OS on my Pogoplug. I think Pogoplug will find out very soon that they made some bad decisions.

Hi All,

Thank you for your insight into this issue. We have a bug currently logged for the most recent version of Xbox 360 firmware. We are currently working on a fix to get this back up and running.

I have noted all of your comments about sorting through files within the Xbox UI and I will forward these feature requests to our product team. We truly appreciate feedback from our users and I will post here when I have updates on our Xbox 360 compatibility.

Best,

Hi catherine,

The feature this thread is about is the shared folder on the xbox 360, It allowed folder navigation of our media. When you say there is a bug logged for the xbox , does that bug have anything to do with this feature? The reason I ask is because I have a support ticket thats been open since October about the shared folder, I was constantly told you were working on a fix for the last three months ...... Then another pogoplug member posted this:

Eli, Nov 25 23:17 (PST):

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Pogoplug Support.

The sharing was used for completely different purpose and it was not working as it should .

The feature has been removed long ago and hopefully more convenient for searching files will be available in the future.

And  when I qouted this on my support ticket I got this:

  • Hello Eduardo,

Thank you for your patience and apologies for the misleading answer.

After further consulting with our management department, I'm afraid that this feature has indeed been removed.

I apologize for not having a better answer for you.

    Best regards,
    Mor

So my question is, are you working on a fix or has this feature been removed????????????????

 Hi Eduardo,

The bug I was referring to was a compatibility issue with the newest OS of Xbox 360. However, I just checked in about the "shared folder" issue and this issue is also known and being worked on. I will post here as soon as I have any updates, just as I'm sure Mor will be in touch as soon as either of us knows any more.

Catherine

So did you delete it because the feature is being removed or is it being fixed?

Just so everyone knows, I wrote in to my support ticket to get to the bottom of what is going on. The feature has been removed and they are NOT working on a fix, apparently Catherine was mistaken.  They say they are taking our request for folder navigation in to consideration but that was also something I requested when I first got my pogo like three years ago and they said the same thing then. Very disappointing to see how this was handled by pogoplug.

You are correct, I was mistaken and I wanted to look into the issue further this week before responding so not to come back with misleading information. I apologize for my mistake.

About the folder names, it is also bad that you have to use English only to name your folders or only the exact word Movies instead of Videos. Not all video is a movie. Not everybody uses English. And even if I use English, where is the flexibility of naming your folders in YOUR OWN way/language? Come on! Letś get into 21st Century! Please allow ANY folder name!!

I just bought a Pogoplug series 4 and I spend a lot of time researching before I pulled the trigger and bought it.  One of the main reasons that I bought this product was to have a dedicated hard drive that I could stream to my Xbox 360.  Now that I have it and I am realizing that you have to join the paid service to be able to stream.....lets just say that I am more than a little pissed off.  It sound like this feature was available in the past and now Pogoplug has decided to make it a paid option rather than a simple sharing option.  Two thumbs way down Pogoplug....WAY DOWN.  I will not recommend your product in the future untill this is solved.  In fact....I will post a Facebook rant letting everyone know what a ripoff this is.  Please stop being greedy and give the consumer what they deserve.

>>>  you have to join the paid service to be able to stream

Which "paid service" are you referring to; Pogoplug PC  (that has a cost of $29) or Pogoplug Backup (which is free)?  Or perhaps the older (and not available now,) Premium subscription?

I have also lost the ability for the Xbox 360 to see the Pogoplug. Verified that sharing to Xbox is enabled from Pogoplug menu and that Xbox can connect to other external items (direct connection of usb drive and connection to Windows Media Server) and have restarted everything.

Hopefully this update that CatherineC says they are working on will resolve everyone's folder issue and restore compatibility for basic Xbox 360 streaming.

I bought a pogoplug classic a couple of weeks ago through Ibood.  It was inexpensive and now I know why.    DIscovered this thread about the folders and now i just keep my movies on the pogoplug.  Waiting for a solution from the engineers before i put my television series on the pogoplug because it will be a unusable list if i do that.   This is the mail from Mor when I submitted a ticket for the folder problem:

Hello Kuang,

Thank you for contacting Pogoplug Support.

The behavior you describe is expected. Unfortunately, the folder structure is not preserved when streaming to your Xbox. We used pages in our web client to avoid slow loading times for users with many many files.

Nevertheless, I will make sure to forward this to our development team for further observation as hopefully they will be able to resolve this with future versions.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Best regards,

I picked up a new Pogo Classic for $15 on an online clearance. It works well for basic file-sharing, but I've found what you all have... My 1TB of movies all sorted with folder structure on the HDD, has NO folder structure when viewed on the XBox 360. This is a no-go for me and thankfully I'm only into it for $15.

My questions for you all are as follows:

1) Can the PogoPlug stream media to other set-top boxes such as a Roku Box or WD TV Play? I've always been a bit insulted that to stream online content with my XB360 I have to pay for a "Live Gold" account anyway, so a $50-90 box is still something I'll consider. If it does stream to the Roku or WD TV Play, does it keep the Folder Structure on those devices, or would it also appear as a giant list of unsorted files?

2) If PogoPlug does not support sharing Folder Structure to any set-top boxes, what NAS/Cloud Server boxes do support it? Synology? Drobo?

Thanks,

-FP

@Ford Prefect

I will start off by answering your question above by saying, "Not everything that can stream to other devices can stream everything to everything."  But, they can stream to almost everything these days.

For starters, do you know about using the Windows 7 "Play To" streaming feature of the Windows Media Player?  Explore using that to begin with.  (If you are running Pogoplug PC on your PC you will have to turn it OFF to use Play To because Pogoplug PC interfers with it and prevents it from operating.  (This could be the case with streaming programs other than Play To, but since I usually do not have Pogoplug PC running on my PC much anymore, I just do not know this for sure.)

I recently began using a free app called Twonky Beam.  It can "beam"  (i.e. stream) lots of different media from your PC, and even your Pogoplug drive, to a DLNA device (e.g. a WDTV, Roku, XBox, etc) .  A tablet or mobile phone is needed to run Twonky Beam.  I have not written anything here about it yet, but I did at the WDTV forum, so click here for the full story on it over there:  Twonky Beam app is awesome for WDTV, Roku, etc. - Western ...

There is also a PC version of this called Twonky 7, so go to www.my.twonky.com for more info.

Not every kind of media file can be streamed these ways, for example, ISO and MKV files can't.  BUT, there is another app called VLC Streamer that can stream these files in a round-about way, and I wrote about it in this forum.  See this link:  VLC Streamer and your Pogoplug drive

This is pleny of suggestions to get you going.

MacDaxon .

I want to thank all of you users for your comments here. You have all saved me the time and money I was considering in investing in a Pogoplug. Currently I simply share my video files to my xbox360 using windows homegroup and adding the folders I want shared into the corresponding library. I have had no issues doing so and my folders display as I have created them. I was interested in this device to create a cloud of my own that I could give my family access to, but I can see no reason whatsoever to give this company any of my money. Months of ignored complaints can only mean one thing, they don't want or plan to fix it.

In response to MacDaxon,
Kinda sad isn't it? The worst part is there used to be a convoluted work around to get it working, then one forced firmware update later its removed with no notice or hope of getting the feature back. Then we are all left to try and figure out on our own whether its just an issue with my pogo or was it a silent update that killed it...

After many failed attempts to make it work, I took off my Pogoplug from my network yesterday. It was not only the Xbox streaming that disappeared. Pogoplug software generated tons of Gigabytes in a folder named .cedata that was a big deal for my storage resources and speed. And every now and then I could not connect to the device at all. Several tickets with Support didn't help out either. I was using my Pogoplug to stream without a PC all the time on, and it worked fine. But once my files were not accesible, I even reformatted my 2TB HDD. Support blames anything but their device. I am fed up with it. I connected my HDD now to my new router and which provides streaming, accesibility, it is WAY faster, I see my files as I created them, not manipulated, there are no tons of micro files in a conspicous .cedata folder and I can access it as a mapped HDD from Windows. Bye-bye Pogoplug! Never again and never a recommendation to anyone!

All,

Last night was tinkering with my Pogo trying to set up Samba and looking at different UPnP options (will go in to details if required), anyway got Samba working but was failing to get UPnP media streamer working.  In checking to see if anything was showing up on my Xbox 360 I found that the old "Shared Folders" were populated as they used to be!  It was late and I was packing up everything when I discovered this, so I haven't looked into it in any more detail yet.

So I was wondering if anything had changed for anyone else?  If so "maybe" Cloud Engines have rolled something out?  If not I'll post back here what I did to see if it helps anyone else.

FINALLY some good news... maybe... ;-)
