Failed Backup

Michael Demaree
posted this on July 03, 2012 09:27

I have installed the backup software and set it up for continuous backup of desktop and MyDocuments.
It seemed to work, but during inital sync I got a message that 2 files failed to backup.
Is there any way to see what the 2 files were and why they did not get backed up?

I second that feature. We need more information other than 2 errors were found.

Is there any backup software that works 100% with Pogoplug device?

Can't use this software if I don't know what is failing?

I have used EASUS free backup solution with  the pogoplug drives.

Michael, I have read your post and documented the fact that our users request more detailed error messages within our Backup Software.  Thank you for the suggestion, and we welcome future requests within our Feature Requests section of the User Forums.

I use a folder sync app for backup. Seems to work without issues for me.

Hi Daniel,

What folder sync app are you using? I'm looking for a sync solution too.

I use Microsoft's SyncToy http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155

I just setup a "PogoPlug" folder and have synctoy sync that folder to the cloud.

Specifically for backup I use a program called Beyond Compare (you can script with it pretty easy) http://www.scootersoftware.com/ to backup any changed files to a remote pogoplug device.

Thanks Daniel! How do you get SyncToy to sync periodically? Is there a script you are using?

Add it to the Windows Task Scheduler. Here is an article how: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-automate-windows-programs-on-a-... While I was looking that up, I found this article that might be of use to you: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/is-freefilesync-better-sync-software-t...

This is great information! Thank you so much!

I managed to set it up using Task Scheduler and it works great. My only issue is the  CMD box that keeps popping up. I Googled and found some solutions but none which seems to work. How are  you resolving this issue?

Hmm, I use the task scheduler for my backup job so when it pops up... I am asleep (have it set to run at 2am).

Another tool you can look into (which I haven't used in a while is Allway Sync) Which I believe can sync in background.

What is up with the latest updates?

I thought most of these were already fixed?  Has anybody else been having issues with backup stops when Pogoplug Backup window is closed on Windows?
Always wondered why it said it was always trying to send files for backup.

Pogoplug Companion Software v 5.1.1 is now available for upgrade and at pogoplug.com/downloads. This is a bug fix release that addresses the following issues:
- Unable to permanently remove backups
- Backups automatically restart after relaunch on Windows
- Backup stops when Pogoplug Backup window is closed on Windows
- Graphical layout bug with Pogoplug Backup settings on Mountain Lion

Also.. When does pogoplug plan on adding info on when a backup failed and what files were effected?

I downloaded v 5.1.1.0. I and continue to get a backup failure on the first of 4 backup folders. The remaining three will not continue. This renders the backup feature useless. Any timeframe for fiing this issue or do i need to move to sync toy like the previous users?

Ditto - I am getting an error for 1 file, no idea what file, or what error.  Retrying doesn't clear the status.

Also, it would be nice to know the status of a backup, i.e. "backing up 1 file of 2418".

Gali.... Is there any way to get info on the Support Ticket regarding the failed backup? I'm sure users would like to be able to follow what is going on with the ticket and when they can expect it to get resolved.

I get 1 file failed when backing up to the cloud or the pogoplug device.  My guess it is a file that is open - perhaps the backup software is not using shadow copy.

Actually, a very simple command line can do almost everything PogoPlug Backup can do;

xcopy /Y /S /D "M:\Pictures\*.*" "P:\Passport - Silver\Pictures\" >> B:\CopyLog.txt

The "/Y" copies without a prompt, the "/S" copies subdirectories, and the "/D" only copies newer files. Then I dump the result into a log file.

Then, run that command line from task scheduler and you have a daily backup on PogoPlug. No need to wait for them to fix that awful backup program.

Love the idea of using xcopy and may use that for a solution.
However....If this is the case I would have been better off using dropbox on a PC with backup to a USB or 2nd drive.

I pursed the Pogoplug to get rid of the PC.  Wanted to be able to share files and backup without worrying if PC was on or not.
Really need the ability to run backups without the PC.

I was referring to using Xcopy instead of the PogoPlug Backup software. Both need the PC to run. You can still backup and access the files from other platforms while the PC is turned off.

Sorry about that....I was thinking about the web interface backup software.  Not quite sure I trust it either.
I am going to use the XCOPY on my desktop for the nightly updates.  Thanks for the help.

In my documents folder on my iMac, I'm getting this "1 error found" message as well. Most of the folder has been backed up and is available online and in the Pogoplug drive but I have no idea what the error is or how to fix it. I am adding my voice for more information and a troubleshooting method.

One thing I noticed is that if you hover over the error statement, it will give you at least a sentence of what's wrong. In my case, I hovered and got "no space left on device" which, even though the app meter was inaccurately reporting the space used, led me to recount my files and realize I had gone JUST over the free limit. Once solved, the error went away. So hover over the error and you should get some more information.

I have the same issue.  Why have a backup program if errors are nebulous and undisclosed.  I am fully aware on how to download and install other third party applications to do backups but thats not the point.  The whole point of a backup program is to ensure that your data is safe.  If it isn't, you need to know WHAT failed and WHY.  Don't release it as a backup program if it cant at least do THAT.  Even if it just creates a log file somewhere with the specific failures would make the product infinitely more valuable!!!

Hi All,

Thank you all for your feedback. We hear you loud and clear and are working on a version currently which will have visibility into which files have error.  In the meantime, if you are having errors show up while you back up, please contact our support team. They can set you turn up the verbosity in the logs on your computer, so we can figure out which files have errors.

Best,

Catherine

Hi Catherine,

I am also experiencing the errors during back-up. I really would want to find out what files cause this error.

In the past I have experienced errors while manually copying directories for back-up, usually caused by file names that, including folder references became too long for windows. How do I contact the support team for turning on the logging?

Best regards,

Koen
