Video and music files come in all sorts of file types and formats. Your Pogoplug will do its best to either play the original file, or convert it to a format that will work with your browser or mobile device. In order to better understand what file formats and types Pogoplug can play, please read through the following document in order to make it easier to understand and stream your videos and music.
First, if you are having problems, confirm that your media settings are set to the following:
- Make sure the videos are set to transcode: Setting-> Media Setting -> Optimize your videos for remote playback -> Always
1. Avi and mpg files, while recognized by the Pogoplug Web UI, will not play if their underlying video and audio codecs (see below) are unsupported by the Pogoplug transcode engine.
2. If the media that you are trying to play has not been transcoded, and you are trying to play the original file, it is very possible that the media player on the browser does not support the original format of the video. For a video to play, the browser must support the video codec.
3. Successful video transcodes for these devices require a supported video and audio codec. If the video and audio are encoded in formats that the Pogoplug transcode engine does not support, the video will not play.
Transcoding and streaming transcoded videos:
Transcode behaves differently depending on the class of the Pogoplug device. There are two classes of devices (as far as streaming video is concerned). The first class utilizes a real time hardware accelerated transcode engine (Pogoplug PC for Mac and Windows) and the second uses a software-based background transcode (Pogoplug v1/v2, Pogoplug Biz/ Classic/ Pro, Pogoplug enabled devices from Buffalo and Seagate)
Real Time Transcode Vs. Background Transcode:
Real Time Transcode Supported Codecs
Background Transcodes supported Codecs:
H.263/MPEG-4 Part 2 (DIVX, XVID, Nero Digital)
H.264, AVC, MPEG-4 Part 10 AVCHD, M-JPEG
H.264, AVC, MPEG-4 Part 10, AVCHD
AAC, AC-3, LPCM
Html 5 supported audio/video formats under each browser
Chrome & Safari:
H.264, AVC, MPEG4 Part 10
MP3, AAC, WAV, PCM
The Pogoplug Web UI currently doesn’t support streaming HTML5 video/audio with Firefox.
If using Firefox you should uncheck "Use HTML5 video/audio if your browser supports it" under media settings at my.pogoplug.com)
